Ngxabalala, mawungamthuki uMelika-Mlungu!
Maybe he does not know that Ngxabalala is your praise name, nor what "Nixabalala" means. How about telling him - politely?

Mshengu- 02-15-2008
Carsten, sengizokwehlisa umoya ngoba kusho wena mfowethu. Ukuthi nje uthinte abangathuntwa. I was already about to go mad and fly all the way just to show him the Zulu in Me.

To you uMelika-Mlungu:
Ngxabalala is my praise name. My actual surname is Mshengu. People especially in South Africa from the early years used praise name to distinguish their origins. These praise name would be carried over from generation to generation until now they are still being used. These praise names also came with some sort of tttles with them. for example, some were associated with warriors, some were associated with wealth etc.

If you were born within my clan as an example, you cannot say "thank you" to your direct family person when they gave you something. Instead you would say their praise name which in my case "Ngxabalala".

I could go on and on about the subject but bottom line, you must know the core of what & why you are saying what you are saying in Zulu .

My plea to you is: because you learning, give us the english version and we will give you the Zulu version. And you can practice with what we have given you on us. Do reference to a dictionery BUT rest assured that chances are you will get more value to this forum than your dictionery. It's up to you though. The choice is yours.

Sorry, I had no idea that when you praise someone's family, you have to use their praise name.

Yes, I knew about praise names. (isithakezelo, in zulu I believe)

and please oh please don't be Cetshwayo or Dingane or Shaka, I made a simple umlungu faux pas. biggrin.gif

Mshengu- 02-18-2008
Well, it so happens that my 2nd Great Grandfather's name is Cetshwayo. BUT not Shaka's father though.

Mshengu, I am sure you meant Shaka's Nephew.

Eitherway in my clan we also had (>250 years) Kings called Malandela, Luzumane and Ndaba, the Zulu clan also has the same names for some of their old kings.

Mshengu- 02-19-2008
Oh yes, I think you are right...

If I know my history right, Shaka was the first king of the Zulus around 1825- 1836. He organized the Mfecane and successfully kicked out the Ndebele and the Xhosa (well almost).

Dingane killed Andrieus Pretorious on the banks of the Ncome(bloodriver),

And Cetshwayo defeated the British in Isandhlwana on January 22,1879.

(Yes, this is very biased history).

Anyone see if my sentences are correct
( and yes I knew about the E prefix, I thought they had Zulu names like Durban is eThekwini and Johannesburg is EGoli and Cape Town is eKapa).

Anyone

No, No.
The Zulu clan had many other kings before Shaka.
Shaka united the different Nguni clans in the now KZN arrear.
Secondly Shaka died around 1828.
Here is what wiki has to say:
QUOTE
Shaka (sometimes spelled Tshaka, Tchaka or Chaka; ca. 1787 – ca. 22 September 1828) was the most influential leader of the Zulu Empire.

There are so many thing wrong here, I don't know where to begin.
-He indeed was one of the triggers of Mfecane.

To be continued........

Ngiummelikalungu- 03-04-2008
Well Mzilikazi split the Ndebele from the Zulus doing the Mfecane.

What do you want to say? You do not use -ya- in other tenses that the present tense positive.

I am eighteen = Ngineminyaka eyishumi nesishiyagalombili (lit.: I have years that are ten and eight)
or: Iminyaka yami iyishumi nesishiyagalombili (lit.: My years are ten and eight)

There are various other more vivid ways of referring to one's age but these are the most basic ones I think.
