Hi!

I was wondering if anyone knows of a zulu word for 'pollution'. I'm researching conceptualisation and articulation of environmental problems in Umlazi, Durban. While air quality is a major issue there, most of my interviewees could't provide me with a word for 'pollution' that encapsulates all forms of air, water, soil, land etc degradation. There were however terms for describing dirty air (umoya umoopi) or dirty water (ngwolo umanzi). I am currently transcribing interviews and while these terms come up often, I have no idea how to spell them correctly - or if I am even hearing them correcly...assistance there would be appreciated as well!

Best wishes,
Lisa

dunga = pollute
air pollution = umoya odengekile
umoya omubi = bad air (bad spirit) depends on the context

ukungcola = dirt, unclean, bad deeds/language
umoya ongcolile = polluted air/bad spirit/dirty air.
umoya = air, spirit
omubi = the bad one/evil one/ugly one
umoya omubi = bad air/bad spirit

Pretty much what Mshengu said.

Excellent - thank you so much!

For water pollution - would umubi, ukungcola or ongcolile be most applicable?

for water pollution its (a)manzi (a)ngcolileyo

molweni...

pollute --> ngcolisa
pollution --> ukungcola

air pollution --> ukungcola komoya
water polution --> ukungcola kwamanzi
soil polution --> ukungcola komhlabathi

polluted air --> umoya ongcolile(yo)
polluted water --> amanzi angcolile(yo)
polluted soil --> umhlabathi ongcolile(yo)

I think
ukudungeka is still the correct term to use
water pollution- amanzi adungekile
ngoba ukungcola is rather specified, usually used and may be allowed but ukudungeka (is general) seems to be more appropriate.
translation is rather explained than direct translation

ima ngibeke ukudungeka esithombeni:

scenario 1:

1. uyokha amanzi esiphethwini.
2. ufika kuphuza izinkomo.
3. uma uthi uyabheka, amazi ahlangene nothuli/udaka oluhlale luzikile uma kungekho othinta amanzi.

scenario 2:

1. uyokha amanzi esiphethwini.
2. ufika kudlalela khona izingane.
3. uma uthi uyabheka, amanzi achanyelwe kanti futhi anamathini, ocwazi kanye namaphepha, konke lokhu ebekudlala izingane.

in these scenarios, which water is polluted?

Sbosh, engathi sikhuluma into afanayo, ikuphi inkaba yakho biggrin.gif . I like what you said:

. In the context of what nancdru42 is looking for, I put my head on the block that the above explaination is 100% correct to be used as per me & Sbosh.

scenario 1 = polluted = adungekile
scenario 2 = dirty or unclean = angcolile

i say:

scenario 1: - adungekile (diluted -- because when left for a while, the dust will settle and the water wil be safe to drink again)
scenario 2: - angcolile (polluted -- filthy, yucky, disgustingly dirty)

that's my story.

I put my considerable weight behind Ciaa on this one.

Ukudunga yinto yesikhashana uma ulinda kuyazilungela, kanti ukungcola kudinga ukuthi ukukhiphe.
Ukudunga kuhlanganisa udaka/inhlabathi uma ukuluma ngamanzi.
Ukungcola ukhuluma ngezinto eziningi, kungaba yindle (cattle/human dung), amathini, amaphepha noma udoti.

Mshengu- 03-12-2008
How much weight is that? ohmy.gif huh.gif blink.gif

Guys please let's not lose focus. We are looking for this simplest explaination here. You are trying to be technically correct now. What you saying above here = ukuxuba or ukugovuza. Ukudunga does not have to necessarily be used in water scinerio only.
